Family Events in the Greater Houston Area

There are numerous reasons why Houstonians are in love with their city - they love the fast-paced environment, the urban living, the fabulous shopping and dining, the inexpensive office rent, and the family-friendly events in the area. Houston isn't one of the fastest-growing cities in America for no good reason, and the bustling urban environment shouldn't scare families away. If you have children, are living in Houston or plan on visiting soon, check out these family-friendly locales and you won't be disappointed in the city.

1. Discovery Green - This lush location is (for lack of a better word) a water park, playground, concert hall, and enormous garden all rolled into one. The Gateway Fountain and Mist Tree provide fun fountain and sprinkler effects for children to run through and keep cool. The Anheuser-Busch stage hosts concerts and events year round. The park is also home to large, gorgeous pieces of artwork and sculptures to view as you walk along one of its many walking and jogging trails. Unique play equipment shaped like building blocks and animals will keep children entertained for hours. Not to mention, this park boasts stunning landscaping and gardens that give the whole park a very serene feel.

2. The Children's Museum - This location is set up like a regular museum, but the exhibits are especially geared towards kids. FlowWorks is an exhibit that allows children to learn how machines are powered by water, and a huge bonus is that they can get wet! EcoStation is powered solely by solar energy that allows children to step outside and collect insects, create leaf rubbings, and watch birds. Kidtropolis, USA allows children to run a city by managing play businesses, using play money, and keeping order with a play police force. The exhibits are ever-changing and strive to bring authentic, hands-on learning to children.

3. Kemah Boardwalk - The boardwalk has something for everyone. Attractions such as rollercoasters, choo-choo train boardwalk tours, and ferris wheels will thrill you and your family. The Boardwalk Beast is a boat that will zip you around Galveston Bay at speeds up to 40mph. The Aquarium restaurant is home to Stingray Reef, which is essentially a stingray petting zoo as well as a place to eat, and there is plenty of dining and shopping to enjoy. Kemah has something for everyone in the family!

4. Splashtown - This family-friendly water park boasts a large, diverse amount of activities for everyone. For the thrill-seekers, the park is home to three raft rides that shoot you through tunnels and blast you into pools in a tube. For the loungers, there are plenty of pools with chairs and even a lazy river for your relaxation pleasure. For the little ones, Crocodile Isle, Treehouse Island and Blue Lagoon Activity Pool offer water-friendly playground equipment complete with waterfalls and a bucket that dumps 1,000 gallons of water on your head!

5. Houston Zoo - The Houston Zoo is located in the middle of bustling downtown and next to the beautiful Hermann Park. In addition to the elephant, primate, aquarium, and numerous other animal exhibits, the zoo also boasts giraffe feeding, 4-D IMAX films, a Wildlife Carousel, and a zoo animal-themed water play park.
